JOB SUMMARY
This position is responsible for guiding day-to-day operations of field maintenance for all athletic fields, including turf maintenance, baseball/softball repairs and daily grooming, soccer goal mouth repair, irrigation, field layout, application of fertilizer and herbicides, mowing, outdoor ice rinks and snow removal. Works closely with the Assistant Superintendent to coordinate day-to-day operations. Other duties include:
- Provide leadership and coordinate crews in the field
- Conduct thorough park athletic field inspections on a regular basis
- Turf maintenance, including seeding, topdressing, aerating, fertilizing and spraying applications of herbicides and insecticides
- Baseball/softball field daily grooming and repairs, including rebuilding mounds and batters’ boxes, resetting bases, lip removal, dirt leveling, fence repairs and home plate repairs
- Track material usage
- Act as the Supervisor-on-Duty in the absence of the Assistant Superintendent
- Organize a task from start to completion in an efficient and timely manner and keep crew members working effectively at all times
- Communicate matters of importance in a timely manner
- Recommend improvements and efficiencies
- Conduct all work in a safe manner, including using personal protective equipment and safety devices as required; identifies and reports any real or potential safety hazards
- Irrigation troubleshooting and repairs
- Construction, maintenance and repair of outdoor ice rinks
- Seasonal duties (snow removal, salting, etc.)
- Performs other duties as assigned
QUALIFICATIONS
Must have an Associate’s Degree or professional certification in a building trade or related field. Will consider significant and material experience in lieu of formal education. At least seven (7) years of relevant experience required in athletic field maintenance. Professional certification(s) and/or active membership in a professional association is desirable. Pesticide Applicators License required or ability to obtain within six months. Valid Illinois driver’s license required.
SCHEDULING & PAY
This is a full-time, year-round, hourly (non-exempt) position working Tuesday through Saturday from 7:00 a.m.-3:30 p.m. Potential for schedule change based on department needs. Must be available for required overtime, special events and weather-related duties. The anticipated hiring range for this position is $33.99-$41.64/hour ($70,699-$86,611 annually), commensurate with experience. The full pay range for this position is $33.99-$49.29/hour ($70,699-$102,523 annually).
