S.T.A.R.S. Lead Counselor
The Village of Brookfield Parks and Recreation Department is seeking qualified candidates for the seasonal position of S.T.A.R.S. Lead Counselor. As a Lead Counselor, you will be responsible for overseeing the day-to-day planning, organizing, and implementing all S.T.A.R.S. A Lead Counselor is the definition of a team player. You will be a superhero who doesn't wear a cape...but some days you might get to!
Pay & Hours
- The starting hourly rate is $18.00+ DOQ.
- Work dates: August - June, additional opportunities for summer camp supervisor employment.
- Work hours: 6:30 a.m. - 9:30 a.m. and 2:15 p.m. - 6:30 p.m., Monday - Friday, additional hours may be required.
Responsibilities & Duties
- Gain knowledge and understanding of Parks and Recreation Department policies and procedures and see that they are always adhered to.
- Ensure that counselors have planned, organized, and conducted a variety of program activities for all participants in crafts, games, sports, drama, nature and/or special events.
- Assist counselors in planning and execution of plans.
- Ensure counselors are performing at their best standard.
- Run errands and gather supplies for the S.T.A.R.S. program.
- Supervises program plans and facility schedules.
- Weekly visits to S.T.A.R.S. site locations to ensure productivity.
- Interact with the children in both one-on-one and group activities.
- Create, plan, and implement special events with direction of Recreation Supervisor.
- Ensure counselors plan and conduct a variety of "positive" program activities for the areas of: sports/games, arts-n-crafts, drama, music, dance, team building and special events.
- Assist in record keeping by taking attendance, collecting permission slips, utilizing each child's emergency information of ePACT, and filling out accident/incident reports as needed.
- Ensure that counselors are keeping facility, supplies, and equipment clean and safe by reporting breakage and safety problems. Assist in cleaning up and straightening room before, during and after each session.
- Report breakage and safety problems to Recreation Supervisor.
- Attending staff training as they pertain to policies and procedures, safety, or other subjects as appropriate.
- Assist Recreation Supervisor with additional administrative work.
- Observe and follow all Village safety policies and regulations. The safety of the staff and patrons is a continuing responsibility of all staff members.
Preferred Qualifications
- Must be at least 18 years of age or older.
- Having prior experience working with children and/or interest in education or recreation as a career goal is preferred.
- Ability to interact with children and teach them in a fun, interactive way.
- Must be personable and comfortable speaking to children, parents, staff, and public of all ages and backgrounds.
- Possess good problem-solving skills and have the capacity to act rationally and calmly in high stress and/or emergency situations.
- Possess enthusiasm, drive, and a desire to accomplish goals and objectives.
- Be able to work in a team environment promoting positive and effective working relationships with staff and the public.
- Able to be flexible and adapt to sudden new situations.
- Able to accept constructive criticism and/or supervision.
- Able to manage multiple tasks simultaneously.
- Must have excellent customer service skills.
- Must be able to follow directions and perform responsibilities as described.
- Possess time management and organizational skills to effectively perform responsibilities of the job.
- Represent the Parks and Recreation Department in a professional manner.
- Have good safety awareness and use of good judgement in all aspects of this position.
- Must have transportation and be able to travel to our partnering schools.
- Strongly possess a passion for giving out the best service to our community.
